- how do i disasemble a steering gear from a craftsman lawn tractor?
the steering wheel only want to turn to the right . If you turn it to the left it 'pops' and will not turn the wheels. I can not figure how to take it off or seems like the steering bar needs to come up.
A I'm guessing here, but I think that the pop you hear is a gear jumping a cog. If so, the gear is badly worn or something is restricting the wheels from turning. If this is not a very, very old tractor, it is the first time I have ever heard of a steering gear wearing out. I would look for restrictions first. To get there you will have to do a lot of disassembly. I suggest that you talk to the Sears repair shop manager and tell him your problem. See if he can give you any hints. On my Sears mower, I have simply oiled the heck out of the steering assembly, shaft, cogs, etc when needed. Don't be afraid to waste a little oil. Then try to turn the steering wheel and see if you can determine what is causing the problem. That's about the best I can offer. Good luck.

Will not turn left of center. Turns right okay. Trying to turn left makes the steering wheel spin counterclockwise making a clicking noise but will not turn front wheels left. It will turn the front wheels to the right. I think I need to replace a bushing or something at the end of the steering column. How do I get at that part?
