- Mower deck stopped working?
I have an older Toro Wheel Horse riding mower. Today I went up a steep hill too quickly and I heard a quick snap or cracking noise, and it now appears that the mower blades no longer spins on the deck. The belt is still in place but it doesn't seem that tight anymore. When I turn on the PTO (Power Take Off) switch it doesn't engage the mower blades. I am a total repair newbie, as I just got this mower about a month ago. When I manually pull on the belt the mower blade will still spin. Hopefully this is an easy fix- PLEASE HELP!
A Sounds like the spring on the tensioner pulley has come off. You may have to remove the deck to locate it and get it back on. Sounds like you have an electric clutch on the mower so the spring would be holding the pulley tight against the belt all the time. The spring is usually 3-4 inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter. You may not have lost it, it could still be there or it could have broken. Look for the tensioning pulley and it should be obvious where the spring goes. The tensioning pulley will be on an arm that swings freely if the spring is not attached.
